Medis alternative
Switching from Medis to NetPractice
Medis Technologies sells practice software - Medis Elite and Medis Elite Online - and a bureau service built around photographing claims, with branches across South Africa. The decision to leave usually turns on whether you want to do your own billing at all.
What Medis Technologies says about Medis
In Medis Technologies’s own words, from its public website:
- Offers Medis Elite, Medis Elite Online, a patient app, a Claims Capture App and a Medis Bureau App.
- Through the Bureau App a practice photographs a claim and "our experienced consultants receive and begin processing it instantly".
- Lists a claims tracker, practice performance, an interactive calendar, chronic disease listing, an electronic health record and artificial intelligence among its features.
- Has branches in Durban, Johannesburg, Cape Town, East London and Dubai.
- Does not publish prices on its website.

Medis and NetPractice side by side
| Medis | NetPractice | |
|---|---|---|
| Runs on | Medis Elite and Medis Elite Online | Any browser, on a phone or a computer - nothing to install |
| Pricing | Not published | Published: R9.50 per claim, first 10 each month free, no monthly fee or contract |
| Real-time claims | Not stated on its website | Yes - accepted or rejected back in seconds |
| Billing done for you | Yes - consultants process claims you photograph | No - software your practice runs. Bureaus can use our partner programme |
Medis can take the billing off your hands: you photograph the claim and its consultants process it. NetPractice is the other model - your practice captures the visit and the claim goes to the scheme in real time, with the accepted or rejected answer back in seconds while the patient may still be in the building. It costs R9.50 per claim, the first 10 each month free, with no monthly fee and no contract.
When Medis is the better choice
- You want consultants to process your claims for you rather than doing it in the practice.
- You value a nearby branch and in-person support - Medis lists five.
If none of those is you, the rest of this page is how to move without losing money. If you are still choosing, the overview of South African billing software covers the wider market and the five questions that separate the products.
How to switch from Medis without losing money
If Medis consultants have been doing your claims, switching to software means someone in the practice takes that work on, so decide who before the cut-over. Ask Medis for your patient list with scheme details and outstanding balances, split scheme versus patient, and keep access until every claim they submitted is settled.
-
Export before you give notice
Patient list with contact and medical-scheme details, and outstanding balances split scheme versus patient. CSV or Excel - a PDF is a picture of the data, not the data.
-
Open NetPractice alongside
Create your account and send new visits from NetPractice. The first 10 claims each month are free.
-
Let Medis finish, then close
A claim already submitted cannot move: the scheme replies to the system that sent it. Keep read access until each one is paid, rejected or written off - up to four months for anything disputed - then take a final export and close the account.
The longer version, including what to negotiate on the way out, is in how to switch practice management software.
Frequently asked questions
Is NetPractice an alternative to Medis?
If you want to run your own claims, yes. NetPractice submits to South African schemes in real time from any browser, at R9.50 per claim with the first 10 each month free. If you want someone else to capture and process your claims, Medis’s bureau model is the closer fit - NetPractice is software, not a bureau.
Does Medis publish its prices?
Not on its website as at 31 October 2026. Ask for the full cost in writing - including any percentage of collections if you use the bureau - so you can compare it with a per-claim price.
Can I try NetPractice before I leave Medis?
Yes. Create a free account and submit real claims for new visits while Medis finishes the claims it already sent. The first 10 claims each month are free, so running both for a payment cycle costs little or nothing.
